Physicists make strides in understanding quantum entanglement

Dec. 14, 2012 ? While some theoretical physicists make predictions about astrophysics and the behavior of stars and galaxies, others work in the realm of the very small, which includes quantum physics. Such is the case at UC Santa Barbara, where theoretical physicists at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) cover the range of questions in physics.

Recently, theoretical physicists at KITP have made important strides in studying a concept in quantum physics called quantum entanglement, in which electron spins are entangled with each other. Using computers to calculate the extreme version of quantum entanglement -- how the spin of every electron in certain electronic materials could be entangled with another electron's spin -- the research team found a way to predict this characteristic. Future applications of the research are expected to benefit fields such as information technology.

"Quantum entanglement is a strange and non-intuitive aspect of the quantum theory of matter, which has puzzled and intrigued physicists since the earliest days of the quantum theory," said Leon Balents, senior author of a recent paper on this topic published in the journal Nature Physics. Balents is a professor of physics and a permanent member of KITP.

Quantum entanglement represents the extent to which measurement of one part of a system affects the state of another; for example, measurement of one electron influences the state of another that may be far away, explained Balents. In recent years, scientists have realized that entanglement of electrons is present in varying degrees in solid materials. Taking this notion to the extreme is the "quantum spin liquid," a state of matter in which every electron spin is entangled with another.

Balents said that quantum spin liquids are being sought in experiments on natural and artificial minerals. A key question posed by physicists is how to calculate theoretically which materials are quantum spin liquids. "In our paper, we provide an answer to this question, showing that a precise quantitative measure of 'long-range' entanglement can be calculated for realistic models of electronic materials," said Balents.

"Our results provide a smoking gun signature of this special type of entanglement that determines whether or not a given material is a quantum spin liquid," explained Balents. The results prove that an emblematic example of this type of problem -- material with electron spins residing on the "kagome lattice" -- is indeed a quantum spin liquid, according to Balents. The kagome lattice is a pattern of electron spins named after a type of Japanese fishing basket that this arrangement of spins resembles.

"We expect the technique we developed to have broad applications in the search for these unique quantum states, which in the future may have remarkable applications in information technologies," said Balents.

?Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children?

~ The Family: A Proclamation to the World

My favorite quotes?, regarding mothers:

?Motherhood is near to divinity. It is the highest, holiest service to be assumed by mankind. It places her who honors its holy calling and service next to the angels.? ~The First Presidency

Elder Richard G. Scott said,

??Satan had unleashed a seductive campaign to undermine the sanctity of womanhood, to deceive the daughters of God and divert them from their divine destiny. He well knows women are the compassionate, self-sacrificing, loving power that binds together the human family?.He has convinced many of the lie that they are third-class citizens in the kingdom of God. That falsehood has led some to trade their divinely given femininity for male coarseness.?

Sister Beck said,?

?Who will prepare this righteous generation of sons and daughters? Latter-day Saint women will do this ? women who know and love the Lord and bear testimony of Him, women who are strong and immovable and who do not give up during difficult and discouraging times.? This really impressed me. It also showed me the significance it is of my divine role of being a mother and nurturer.?

?There is no more noble work than that of a good and God-fearing mother.? ??but she who rears successfully a family of healthy, beautiful sons and daughters, whose influence will be felt through generations to come?deserves the highest honor that man can give, and the choicest blessings of God.? ?I think that this is an important thing for women to understand. The women of the world today are confused about their roles and are fulfilling careers and working outside the home.?

I liked President Benson?s words when he said, ?Mothers who help families pray and play together will stay together and will bless children?s lives forever.?

President Benson talked about the widows and mothers who for various reasons need to work outside the home and support themselves, and said, ?But these instances are the exception, not the rule.? I think still too often even women of the church want think that this means it is perfectly acceptable to have a career. Whereas I don?t think it is necessarily wrong, I still think a woman should be in the home raising and loving her children and ready to be at hand to them.?

To those who have not yet married or had children or who cannot have children:

Sister Sheri Dew has not had the chance to marry nor have children. She is a big example to me of a righteous sister in Zion. Side note, one of my absolute favorite books is by her called, ?No One Can Take Your Place.? Such a good read!! Back to motherhood here are some of her words:

?both God the Father and Adam called Eve ?the mother of all living? ? and they did so before she ever bore a child?.It is the essence of who were are as women. It defines our very identity, our divine stature and nature, and the unique traits our Father gave us.??

?Every one of us can show by word and by deed that the work of women in the Lord?s kingdom is magnificent and holy. I repeat: We are all mothers in Israel, and our calling is to love and help lead the rising generation through the dangerous streets of mortality.??

Discovery of tiny fossil new to science

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

'It is exciting to discover that a common group of fossils that we thought we knew a lot about may well have been hood-winking us as to their true identity, which we now realise because we have their beautifully fossilised soft-parts. A case of a 'wolf in sheep's clothing''- Professor David Siveter, University of Leicester

An international team of researchers have made an extremely rare discovery of a species of animal - related to crabs, lobsters and shrimps ? that is new to science.

Scientists from the universities of Leicester, Oxford, Imperial and Yale have announced their discovery of a new and scientifically important fossil species of ostracod in the journal, Proceedings of The Royal Society B. The research was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council.

The discovered species, which is up to 10 millimetres long, is special because it is exceptionally well preserved, complete with not only the shell but also the soft parts ? its body, limbs, eyes, gills and alimentary system. Such discoveries are extremely rare in the fossil record.

The discovery of the tiny shelled arthropod was made in 425 million year old rocks in Herefordshire, Welsh Borderland. The rocks at the site date to the Silurian period of geological time, when southern Britain was a sea area on a small continent situated in warm, southerly subtropical latitudes. The ostracods and associated marine animals living there were covered by a fall of volcanic ash that preserved them frozen in time.

Professor David Siveter, of the University of Leicester Department of Geology, said: "The two ostracod specimens discovered represent a genus and species new to science, named Pauline avibella. The genus is named in honour of a special person and avibella means 'beautiful bird', so-named because of the fancied resemblance of a prominent feature of the shell to the wing of a bird."

"Ostracods are the most abundant fossil arthropods, occurring ubiquitously as bivalved shells in rocks of the last 490 million years, and are common in most water environments today. The find is important because it is one of only a handful preserving the fossilised soft-tissues of ostracods. Its assignment to a particular group of ostracods based on knowledge of its biology is at odds with its shell form, thus urging caution in interpreting the classification of fossil ostracods based on shell characters alone."

"The preservation of soft-parts of animals is a very rare occurrence in the fossil record and allows unparalleled insight into the ancient biology, community structure and evolution of animals - key facts that that would otherwise be lost to science. The fossils known from the Herefordshire site show soft-part preservation and are of global importance."

The fossils were reconstructed 'virtually', by using a technique that involves grinding each specimen down, layer by layer, and photographing it at each stage. Ten millimetres is relatively tiny, but at an incremental level of 20 ?m (micrometres) that yields 500 slices, which can then be pieced together in a computer to provide a full, three-dimensional image of each fossil, outside and in.

Professor Siveter added: "Fossil discoveries in general help elucidate our own place in the tree of life. This discovery adds another piece of knowledge in the jigsaw of understanding the diversity and evolution of animals."

"It is exciting to discover that a common group of fossils that we thought we knew a lot about may well have been hood-winking us as to their true identity, which we now realise because we have their beautifully fossilised soft-parts. A case of a 'wolf in sheep's clothing'."

Target faulty brain circuits to treat mental illness

IT HAS been more than a decade in the works, but finally we know the main changes that will be introduced next May, when the American Psychiatric Association publishes the next edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, known as DSM-5.

Those changes, which could influence the way millions are treated, include new definitions of autism and related conditions, and a shift in the criteria for depression to include some people grieving after bereavement.

Debate over DSM-5 seems likely to rumble on. But now there is a deeper problem to ponder: while discoveries about the genes and brain circuits that underlie human behaviour are accumulating rapidly, they haven't led to major clinical advances.

That's largely because these findings don't map well on to the constellation of conditions described in the DSM. When the last major revision was completed in 1994, its authors hoped that neurobiologists would soon home in on specific disruptions to brain circuitry involved in the main psychiatric disorders. "I was naive enough to think that it was just a matter of time," says Michael First of Columbia University in New York City. It hasn't worked out that way. Take schizophrenia: what was once considered to be a distinct psychotic disorder actually seems to cover a variety of disruptions to normal brain functioning. This suggests that many of psychiatry's diagnostic labels do not describe coherent conditions with common underlying causes. No wonder, then, that many conditions are so hard to treat.

Some critics argue that it's time to rip up the manual and start again - with wider input. In the coming weeks, organisers of a petition to reform DSM-5 backed by 14,000 mental health professionals plan to launch an online forum to debate a new diagnostic system.

In the long run, the best hope for psychiatric diagnosis may come from the US National Institute of Mental Health, whose Research Domain Criteria project started up this year. Rather than giving people labels such as schizophrenic or depressed, the project aims to develop biological and behavioural measurements reflecting underlying alterations to brain circuitry that can trigger mental illness. Crucially, the measurements will include sliding scales that recognise a continuum between "normality" and ill health - rather like measurements of blood pressure, used to diagnose hypertension.

It could be years before doctors routinely use such measurements, but there are hints at how it could shape the future of psychiatry. For instance, people diagnosed with depression may lose interest in activities they used to enjoy. This symptom is also seen in some other disorders and is linked to disruption in the brain's mesolimbic dopamine circuitry. Being able to measure and treat these disruptions could help people across a broad range of psychiatric illnesses, suggests Bruce Cuthbert, the project's co-ordinator.

Nick Newell wins XFC championship with one hand (VIDEO)

Lost in the hubbub of UFC on Fox 5 was the historic win by Nick Newell. He won XFC's lightweight championship over the weekend despite having just one hand. He was born with an arm that goes just to the elbow because of congenital amputation. As commentator Pat Miletich points out, Newell used his disability to his advantage in locking in a rear-naked choke.

The best part of the video is seeing the young fan who also has a congenital amputation go into cage to congratulate Newell. He is now 9-0, with only one win coming by decision.

South Africa's Mandela has lung infection, responding to treatment

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African President Nelson Mandela, who is 94 and has been in hospital since Saturday for tests, has suffered a recurrence of a lung infection but is responding to treatment, the government said on Tuesday.

The revered anti-apartheid leader and Nobel Peace laureate is spending his fourth day in a hospital in the South African capital Pretoria. He remains a hero to many of South Africa's 52 million people and two brief stretches in hospital in the last two years made front page news.

"Doctors have concluded the tests, and these have revealed a recurrence of a previous lung infection, for which Madiba is receiving appropriate treatment and he is responding to the treatment," the government said in a statement.

Mandela, whose clan name is 'Madiba', was admitted to the Pretoria military hospital on Saturday after being flown from his home village of Qunu, which is in a remote, rural part of the Eastern Cape province.

Until now, South African authorities had given few details about the reason for his latest visit to hospital.

In an interview late on Monday with South Africa's eNCA television channel, Mandela's Mozambican-born wife Graca said the former president's "sparkle" was fading.

When he was admitted to hospital on Saturday, officials stressed there was no cause for concern although domestic media reports suggested senior members of the government and people close to him had been caught unawares.

Mandela, South Africa's first black president and a global symbol of resistance to racism and injustice, spent 27 years in apartheid prisons, including 18 years on the windswept Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town.

He was released in 1990 and went on to be elected president in the historic all-race elections in 1994 that ended white-minority rule in Africa's most important economy.

He used his unparalleled prestige to push for reconciliation between whites and blacks, setting up a commission to probe crimes committed by both sides in the anti-apartheid struggle.

Mandela's African National Congress has continued to govern since his retirement from politics in 1999, but has been criticized for perceived corruption and slowness in addressing apartheid-era inequalities in housing, education and healthcare.

Mandela spent time in a Johannesburg hospital in 2011 with a respiratory condition, and again in February this year because of abdominal pains. He was released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing serious.

He has since spent most of his time in Qunu.

His fragile health prevents him from making any public appearances in South Africa, although he has continued to receive high-profile domestic and international visitors, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton in July.

Clear-Cut Options Associated With Car Insurance Around The U . S ...

Posted by guest6hblogger on Friday, October 12, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

The typical American pays around $850 for car insurance. But, this sum may substantially vary from individual to individual. We?ll go through the key factors most automobile insurance providers look at to determine your rates. Check out this kind of hyperlink: car insurance quotes.

The first point insurance companies often have a look at is the driving document. Incident and traffic infractions can lead to someone paying more. Furthermore, the level of years you happen to be driving plays a part within the place. Typically, those with less years of driving experience may pay an increased premium to obtain car insurance. Weblink: cheap car insurance.

Additionally, the amount of kilometers a man drives and where they live can impact auto insurance charges. You will spend less should you only drive sometimes, since you are less likely to get directly into an accident. A good useful resource can be obtained listed here: http://quickcarinsurancecomparison.com/. If you reside in a small town or rural area a lesser premium will be usually got by you. That is a result of the fact urban drivers are more susceptible to accidents, robbery and vandalism.

Before most businesses will quote a premium next, personal issues such as your age, sex and credit scores are examined. Motorists under 25 are proven to pay more. This really is especially true with men. More males enter mishaps and obtain DUI?s when compared to women. A reduced credit history could also end up in you paying more for insurance every month.

Another vital aspect in determining your insurance fees are the car you drive. You might spend more for automobiles depending on its future hood of acquiring taken. The costs from the car and then for repairs are also important variables. Your car?s security score and safety measures play an important part within your prices.

Lastly, the type of coverage you choose will dictate just how much you buy your automobile insurance. Obviously, you will most likely pay more should you purchase more than your state?s minimum liability coverage. Additional insurance including thorough and accident coverage may cause more income to be paid out by you. Lastly, the deductible you choose will influence your car insurance price. To reduce auto insurance costs you may want to take into account raising your deductible.

UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP: ILLUMINATI CONNECTIONS ...

Today more so than ever, music artists ?are exposing the industry. Countless artists from each genre are helping to lift the veil that?s been blinding the masses since the industries inauguration. Many have shown that they?re pushing the agenda of the global elite and have ?sold themselves out for money and fame . The mainstream music industry has long been used as a form of mind control, attempting to shape the humans perception of reality and feed them their wants, desires and needs coupled with subliminal messaging that becomes implanted in the subconscious mind. It?s one ?portion of the global control matrix that programs the human mind and contributes in preventing the human being from knowing it?s natural state and true self. It?s ?a branch of the entire ?military industrial complex?. This article will examine connections that go beyond the artists, and make you think.

Who are the artists working for? Who owns the mainstream music industry? Who?s pushing the agenda and where did the mainstream music industry come from? Royal bloodlines have always used mechanisms for control. The only difference today is that more tools for control have been developed. The mainstream music industry is controlled by a small group of entities. The largest and first developed ?is the Universal Music Group.

Universal Music Group (UMG) is a multinational music company. It?s the largest of the ?Big Three? record companies which include Sony Music Entertainment and Warner music group. UMG was originally the company attached to the film studio Universal Pictures. However, it?s origins go back to the formation of ?Decca Records. Decca Records originates in England, which is one of the main control hubs of the Illuminati. The Decca corporation of England created their American branch in 1939. Decca Records was renowned for it?s development of recording methods, Decca and UMG are now owned by General Motors and Comcast, and originally owned by Vivendi, a media conglomerate headquartered in France which we will examine later on in this article. Decca referred to themselves as ?The Supreme Record Company?. ?It was formed by merging the word ?mecca? with the initial D of their logo, meaning a place that draws a lot of people. When the Decca branch in America was developed, they set up their studio headquarters in the Pythian Temple?located in New York City. Why would Decca/UMG set up their headquarters at the Pythian Temple? UMG has it?s roots in the Illuminati, at a specific level of the pyramid. Music was to be used strictly for control purposes. As we see today, most forms of human art and creation are now being used as tools of manipulation and deception.?The Pythian Temple is a building that belonged to the Knights of Pythias at the time Decca/UMG set up their studio there. The Knights of Pythias?is a fraternal organization and secret society founded and ?formed in February of 1864, in Washington DC. They were the very first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, whom not surprisingly was a music composer and actor. ?Some notable Pythian Knights include: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

  • ?Nelson A. Rockefeller, U.S. Vice President ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??
  • ?Warren G. Harding, U.S President
  • William McKinley, U.S President?
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.S. President?
  • Hugo Black, U.S. Supreme Court Justice
  • Benjamin Cardozo, U.S. Supreme Court Justice
  • Louis Armstrong, Jazz Musician, actor
  • Sun Ra, Jazz Musician
  • Hubert Horatio Humphrey, U.S. Vice President

Can you see the connection??Universal Music Group (UMG) originated within Decca Records. Decca Records originates in the United Kingdom, and expanded to America which began the inauguration of the UMG. The studio was headquartered at the Pythian Temple at the time, home of the Pythian Knights. Interesting connection that sheds light on a recent brief history of UMG?s major music label.

Given this brief history of UMG, let?s transition into the modern day and look at who and what entity is in control now. Vivendi SA (formerly known as Vivendi Universal) is a French multinational mass media and telecommunication company located in in Paris, France. They were ?sole owners of UMG/Decca until 2004. ?Vivendi SA was originally Compagnie Generale des Eaux (CGE) , and was created by an Imperial decree of Napoleon III in 1854. CGE was created in sole purposes of controlling the water supply. At the same time, the Rothschild family was heavily involved as both had plans to ?take? over ?the americas . They were in constant discussion and dialogue with regards to their plans. CGE has also broken off into Veolia Enviornnement S.A. and is now a major multinational company with activities in water supply, water management, waste management and energy. As you can see, the music industry has some pretty interesting origins and connections by being connected to other industries that regulate the human race and it?s activity on planet Earth.

In 2004, General Electric purchased 80 percent of Universal Pictures from Vivendi, and Vivendi bought 20 percent of NBC forming the company NBC Universal, who is controlled by Comcast and General Electric. ?Now, Comcast and GE both own half. So who owns this major music label now? GM and Comcast.?Banker JP morgan and family funded Thomas Edison?s Electric Illuminating company, and was responsible for the merger between the Illuminating company and General Electric (GE).When Nikola Tesla discovered how to access zero point energy, his lab was burned down and funding stopped. Today, it?s well known that the Rockefeller name is associated with General Electric, General Electric also owns a large part of our mainstream media. The GE headquarters in New York is the focal point of the entire Rockefeller Centre Complex. If you scroll back up to the some of the notable Pythian Knights, you will also see a Rockefeller connection. It?s pretty crazy to see that the music business is a part of this global connection, the ones who control the worlds resources also are also active in General Electric, which owns NBC Universal, which owns Universal Music Group. When it comes to music videos, television and music artists, the higher ups, the ones at the very top are the same ones heavily involved with General Electric. The Illuminati have disguised themselves as a number of multinational corporations, but the leads always lead to the same families, it?s all about controlling the human population, and not having them know it.

Al-Qaida suspected in decapitation of 3 Yemeni men

(AP) ? Yemeni security officials say three decapitated bodies have been found dumped in an open-air market in the eastern province of Marib.

The officials say they suspect al-Qaida militants are behind the gruesome killing of the three men. Next to the bodies, police found CD's linking al-Qaida to the murders. They gave no details.

The security officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with police regulations.

Local media reported Tuesday that the CD's showed the men confessing to being informants for the Yemeni government against al-Qaida, placing tracking devices on cars that became targets of U.S. drone strikes.

Al-Qaida is active in the impoverished nation on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. The group has been blamed for several attempted attacks in the United States.

PC shipments fall, 1 firm says Lenovo overtakes HP

(AP) ? Worldwide shipments of PCs fell sharply in the third quarter, as some consumers spent their electronics dollars on smartphones and tablets and others held off for a new version of Windows.

One research firm also estimated Wednesday that Chinese PC maker Lenovo Group Ltd. outsold Hewlett-Packard Co. for the first time to become the world's largest seller of PCs.

Gartner said global PC shipments fell 8.3 percent to 87.5 million, while IDC said the decline was 8.6 percent to 87.8 million. Their reports came hours after a third research firm, IHS iSuppli, projected that PC shipments are bound for their first annual decline in 11 years.

PC makers began the year with hope that a new wave of lightweight laptops called ultrabooks would provide a sales lift. But ultrabooks haven't been compelling enough to overcome the growing popularity of smartphones and tablet computers. Those mobile devices are reducing the need for consumers and businesses to buy new PCs or replace older ones.

Gartner and IDC agreed that Lenovo was the only one of the top four PC makers that saw an increase in shipments, thanks to low prices. Lenovo vaulted onto the international scene when it bought IBM Corp.'s PC division in 2005. It's been the No. 2 PC maker in the world for a few years, behind Hewlett-Packard Co.

According to Gartner, Lenovo saw worldwide shipments grow 9.8 percent to 13.8 million in the third quarter, giving it a market share of 15.7 percent. HP's shipments fell 16 percent from last year to 13.6 million, for a share of 15.5 percent.

IDC had HP on top with 13.9 million and a share of 15.9 percent, with Lenovo close behind at 13.8 million, or 15.7 percent.

HP, which has its headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif., issued a statement saying that some reports "don't measure the market in its entirety. The IDC analysis includes the very important workstation segment and therefore is more comprehensive. In that IDC report, HP occupies the No. 1 position in PCs."

Both reports are based on estimates. Companies will start releasing their numbers over the next few weeks as part of quarterly earnings reports.

Dell Inc. of Round Rock, Texas, and Acer Group of Taiwan are No. 3 and 4 in both reports. AsusTek Computer Inc., also of Taiwan, is fifth.

In the U.S., both had HP as the top PC maker, followed by Dell, Apple Inc., Lenovo and Acer.

As the year winds down, the PC industry is now counting on an upcoming makeover of the Windows operating system to revive interest in desktop and laptop machines.

Windows 8 has been redesigned by Microsoft Corp. so it can power hybrid PCs that can be controlled by touching a display screen or relying on a keyboard and computer mouse. The revamped operating system also works on tablet computers, including one that is being made by Microsoft. If tablets running on Windows catch on, they threaten to siphon even more sales from PCs.

Machines running on Windows 8 are scheduled to go on sale Oct. 26 from Lenovo, HP, Dell, Samsung Electronics Co. and others.

Even with Windows 8, IHS predicts a 1 percent decrease in PC shipments this year to nearly 349 million. Although small, the anticipated decline would be the first time annual PC sales haven't grown since 2001.

Your child shows up for middle school, but what about his classmates?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 9, 2012) ? How often do your child's classmates go to school? Whether fellow students show up for class matters more than you think, especially if your son or daughter is in middle school, according to Robert Balfanz, a research professor at The Johns Hopkins University School of Education.

While it's natural for parents to focus their attention solely on their own child's attendance, Balfanz said it is also critically important that they start paying attention to what he calls the chronic absentee rate: the percentage of children who miss a month or more of the school year, as detailed in his recent report, The Importance of Being in School: A Report on Absenteeism in the Nation's Public Schools.

Why does having a full classroom matter? Empty desks mean that teachers will either re-teach old material when chronically absent children return to school, which will slow the pace of every child in the room, or they will move ahead to new material anyway, often leading to behavioral problems as the children who have missed many days of school fall further behind their peers and disrupt the rest of the class, Balfanz said.

Monitoring chronic absenteeism is especially critical to ensuring every child's success in middle school and beyond, Balfanz said.

"It's during the middle grades that pathways to adult outcomes start taking shape," Balfanz said. "Students can either be launched toward college success or dropping out. Our research finds, for example, that students who miss a month or more of school in the sixth grade -- that's just two days a month -- are much more likely to drop out than graduate when they live in high-poverty environments."

The average daily attendance at each school as required by states and the federal government doesn't set the bar high enough in terms of the accountability that is needed to improve our schools, Balfanz said. A school could have a high percentage of students showing up every day and still have a significant number of children who are routinely absent. That's why Balfanz advocates that school districts look at absenteeism at the individual-student level in addition to the current system.

Today only Georgia, Florida, Maryland, Nebraska, Oregon and Rhode Island count their chronically absent children, and they all do it differently. This limited data leaves researchers like Balfanz to guess just how bad the problem of chronic absenteeism in American schools may be. Those six states report chronic absentee rates anywhere from 6 percent to 23 percent. By that count, it's not a huge leap to estimate that the national rate of chronic absenteeism hovers somewhere around 10 percent and that it could be as high as 15 percent. That would mean 5 million to 7.5 million children miss 20 or more days of school a year, Balfanz said.

"Chronic absenteeism is like bacteria in a hospital, Balfanz said. "It's a largely unseen force, because we do not currently measure it. Yet it creates havoc with our efforts to successfully educate and prepare all students for college and career."

In this new school year, Balfanz suggests parents keep in mind:

  • What happens in sixth grade doesn't stay in sixth grade. Success or failure during the middle school years will have a huge impact on the trajectory of a child's life, so it's no time to coast.
  • Make sure your middle schooler gets to school regularly. Doing well hinges on showing up to learn, and chronic attendance rates tend to worsen in middle school and continue rising through high school.
  • Make sure your child's classmates are also going to school: If your school does not track chronic absenteeism, encourage administrators to start tracking it, publish the data to the school community and make an effort to bring back their chronically absent students.
