Physicists make strides in understanding quantum entanglement

Dec. 14, 2012 ? While some theoretical physicists make predictions about astrophysics and the behavior of stars and galaxies, others work in the realm of the very small, which includes quantum physics. Such is the case at UC Santa Barbara, where theoretical physicists at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) cover the range of questions in physics.

Recently, theoretical physicists at KITP have made important strides in studying a concept in quantum physics called quantum entanglement, in which electron spins are entangled with each other. Using computers to calculate the extreme version of quantum entanglement -- how the spin of every electron in certain electronic materials could be entangled with another electron's spin -- the research team found a way to predict this characteristic. Future applications of the research are expected to benefit fields such as information technology.

"Quantum entanglement is a strange and non-intuitive aspect of the quantum theory of matter, which has puzzled and intrigued physicists since the earliest days of the quantum theory," said Leon Balents, senior author of a recent paper on this topic published in the journal Nature Physics. Balents is a professor of physics and a permanent member of KITP.

Quantum entanglement represents the extent to which measurement of one part of a system affects the state of another; for example, measurement of one electron influences the state of another that may be far away, explained Balents. In recent years, scientists have realized that entanglement of electrons is present in varying degrees in solid materials. Taking this notion to the extreme is the "quantum spin liquid," a state of matter in which every electron spin is entangled with another.

Balents said that quantum spin liquids are being sought in experiments on natural and artificial minerals. A key question posed by physicists is how to calculate theoretically which materials are quantum spin liquids. "In our paper, we provide an answer to this question, showing that a precise quantitative measure of 'long-range' entanglement can be calculated for realistic models of electronic materials," said Balents.

"Our results provide a smoking gun signature of this special type of entanglement that determines whether or not a given material is a quantum spin liquid," explained Balents. The results prove that an emblematic example of this type of problem -- material with electron spins residing on the "kagome lattice" -- is indeed a quantum spin liquid, according to Balents. The kagome lattice is a pattern of electron spins named after a type of Japanese fishing basket that this arrangement of spins resembles.

"We expect the technique we developed to have broad applications in the search for these unique quantum states, which in the future may have remarkable applications in information technologies," said Balents.

?Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children?

~ The Family: A Proclamation to the World

My favorite quotes?, regarding mothers:

?Motherhood is near to divinity. It is the highest, holiest service to be assumed by mankind. It places her who honors its holy calling and service next to the angels.? ~The First Presidency

Elder Richard G. Scott said,

??Satan had unleashed a seductive campaign to undermine the sanctity of womanhood, to deceive the daughters of God and divert them from their divine destiny. He well knows women are the compassionate, self-sacrificing, loving power that binds together the human family?.He has convinced many of the lie that they are third-class citizens in the kingdom of God. That falsehood has led some to trade their divinely given femininity for male coarseness.?

Sister Beck said,?

?Who will prepare this righteous generation of sons and daughters? Latter-day Saint women will do this ? women who know and love the Lord and bear testimony of Him, women who are strong and immovable and who do not give up during difficult and discouraging times.? This really impressed me. It also showed me the significance it is of my divine role of being a mother and nurturer.?

?There is no more noble work than that of a good and God-fearing mother.? ??but she who rears successfully a family of healthy, beautiful sons and daughters, whose influence will be felt through generations to come?deserves the highest honor that man can give, and the choicest blessings of God.? ?I think that this is an important thing for women to understand. The women of the world today are confused about their roles and are fulfilling careers and working outside the home.?

I liked President Benson?s words when he said, ?Mothers who help families pray and play together will stay together and will bless children?s lives forever.?

President Benson talked about the widows and mothers who for various reasons need to work outside the home and support themselves, and said, ?But these instances are the exception, not the rule.? I think still too often even women of the church want think that this means it is perfectly acceptable to have a career. Whereas I don?t think it is necessarily wrong, I still think a woman should be in the home raising and loving her children and ready to be at hand to them.?

To those who have not yet married or had children or who cannot have children:

Sister Sheri Dew has not had the chance to marry nor have children. She is a big example to me of a righteous sister in Zion. Side note, one of my absolute favorite books is by her called, ?No One Can Take Your Place.? Such a good read!! Back to motherhood here are some of her words:

?both God the Father and Adam called Eve ?the mother of all living? ? and they did so before she ever bore a child?.It is the essence of who were are as women. It defines our very identity, our divine stature and nature, and the unique traits our Father gave us.??

?Every one of us can show by word and by deed that the work of women in the Lord?s kingdom is magnificent and holy. I repeat: We are all mothers in Israel, and our calling is to love and help lead the rising generation through the dangerous streets of mortality.??

Discovery of tiny fossil new to science

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

'It is exciting to discover that a common group of fossils that we thought we knew a lot about may well have been hood-winking us as to their true identity, which we now realise because we have their beautifully fossilised soft-parts. A case of a 'wolf in sheep's clothing''- Professor David Siveter, University of Leicester

An international team of researchers have made an extremely rare discovery of a species of animal - related to crabs, lobsters and shrimps ? that is new to science.

Scientists from the universities of Leicester, Oxford, Imperial and Yale have announced their discovery of a new and scientifically important fossil species of ostracod in the journal, Proceedings of The Royal Society B. The research was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council.

The discovered species, which is up to 10 millimetres long, is special because it is exceptionally well preserved, complete with not only the shell but also the soft parts ? its body, limbs, eyes, gills and alimentary system. Such discoveries are extremely rare in the fossil record.

The discovery of the tiny shelled arthropod was made in 425 million year old rocks in Herefordshire, Welsh Borderland. The rocks at the site date to the Silurian period of geological time, when southern Britain was a sea area on a small continent situated in warm, southerly subtropical latitudes. The ostracods and associated marine animals living there were covered by a fall of volcanic ash that preserved them frozen in time.

Professor David Siveter, of the University of Leicester Department of Geology, said: "The two ostracod specimens discovered represent a genus and species new to science, named Pauline avibella. The genus is named in honour of a special person and avibella means 'beautiful bird', so-named because of the fancied resemblance of a prominent feature of the shell to the wing of a bird."

"Ostracods are the most abundant fossil arthropods, occurring ubiquitously as bivalved shells in rocks of the last 490 million years, and are common in most water environments today. The find is important because it is one of only a handful preserving the fossilised soft-tissues of ostracods. Its assignment to a particular group of ostracods based on knowledge of its biology is at odds with its shell form, thus urging caution in interpreting the classification of fossil ostracods based on shell characters alone."

"The preservation of soft-parts of animals is a very rare occurrence in the fossil record and allows unparalleled insight into the ancient biology, community structure and evolution of animals - key facts that that would otherwise be lost to science. The fossils known from the Herefordshire site show soft-part preservation and are of global importance."

The fossils were reconstructed 'virtually', by using a technique that involves grinding each specimen down, layer by layer, and photographing it at each stage. Ten millimetres is relatively tiny, but at an incremental level of 20 ?m (micrometres) that yields 500 slices, which can then be pieced together in a computer to provide a full, three-dimensional image of each fossil, outside and in.

Professor Siveter added: "Fossil discoveries in general help elucidate our own place in the tree of life. This discovery adds another piece of knowledge in the jigsaw of understanding the diversity and evolution of animals."

"It is exciting to discover that a common group of fossils that we thought we knew a lot about may well have been hood-winking us as to their true identity, which we now realise because we have their beautifully fossilised soft-parts. A case of a 'wolf in sheep's clothing'."

Target faulty brain circuits to treat mental illness

IT HAS been more than a decade in the works, but finally we know the main changes that will be introduced next May, when the American Psychiatric Association publishes the next edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, known as DSM-5.

Those changes, which could influence the way millions are treated, include new definitions of autism and related conditions, and a shift in the criteria for depression to include some people grieving after bereavement.

Debate over DSM-5 seems likely to rumble on. But now there is a deeper problem to ponder: while discoveries about the genes and brain circuits that underlie human behaviour are accumulating rapidly, they haven't led to major clinical advances.

That's largely because these findings don't map well on to the constellation of conditions described in the DSM. When the last major revision was completed in 1994, its authors hoped that neurobiologists would soon home in on specific disruptions to brain circuitry involved in the main psychiatric disorders. "I was naive enough to think that it was just a matter of time," says Michael First of Columbia University in New York City. It hasn't worked out that way. Take schizophrenia: what was once considered to be a distinct psychotic disorder actually seems to cover a variety of disruptions to normal brain functioning. This suggests that many of psychiatry's diagnostic labels do not describe coherent conditions with common underlying causes. No wonder, then, that many conditions are so hard to treat.

Some critics argue that it's time to rip up the manual and start again - with wider input. In the coming weeks, organisers of a petition to reform DSM-5 backed by 14,000 mental health professionals plan to launch an online forum to debate a new diagnostic system.

In the long run, the best hope for psychiatric diagnosis may come from the US National Institute of Mental Health, whose Research Domain Criteria project started up this year. Rather than giving people labels such as schizophrenic or depressed, the project aims to develop biological and behavioural measurements reflecting underlying alterations to brain circuitry that can trigger mental illness. Crucially, the measurements will include sliding scales that recognise a continuum between "normality" and ill health - rather like measurements of blood pressure, used to diagnose hypertension.

It could be years before doctors routinely use such measurements, but there are hints at how it could shape the future of psychiatry. For instance, people diagnosed with depression may lose interest in activities they used to enjoy. This symptom is also seen in some other disorders and is linked to disruption in the brain's mesolimbic dopamine circuitry. Being able to measure and treat these disruptions could help people across a broad range of psychiatric illnesses, suggests Bruce Cuthbert, the project's co-ordinator.

Nick Newell wins XFC championship with one hand (VIDEO)

Lost in the hubbub of UFC on Fox 5 was the historic win by Nick Newell. He won XFC's lightweight championship over the weekend despite having just one hand. He was born with an arm that goes just to the elbow because of congenital amputation. As commentator Pat Miletich points out, Newell used his disability to his advantage in locking in a rear-naked choke.

The best part of the video is seeing the young fan who also has a congenital amputation go into cage to congratulate Newell. He is now 9-0, with only one win coming by decision.

South Africa's Mandela has lung infection, responding to treatment

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African President Nelson Mandela, who is 94 and has been in hospital since Saturday for tests, has suffered a recurrence of a lung infection but is responding to treatment, the government said on Tuesday.

The revered anti-apartheid leader and Nobel Peace laureate is spending his fourth day in a hospital in the South African capital Pretoria. He remains a hero to many of South Africa's 52 million people and two brief stretches in hospital in the last two years made front page news.

"Doctors have concluded the tests, and these have revealed a recurrence of a previous lung infection, for which Madiba is receiving appropriate treatment and he is responding to the treatment," the government said in a statement.

Mandela, whose clan name is 'Madiba', was admitted to the Pretoria military hospital on Saturday after being flown from his home village of Qunu, which is in a remote, rural part of the Eastern Cape province.

Until now, South African authorities had given few details about the reason for his latest visit to hospital.

In an interview late on Monday with South Africa's eNCA television channel, Mandela's Mozambican-born wife Graca said the former president's "sparkle" was fading.

When he was admitted to hospital on Saturday, officials stressed there was no cause for concern although domestic media reports suggested senior members of the government and people close to him had been caught unawares.

Mandela, South Africa's first black president and a global symbol of resistance to racism and injustice, spent 27 years in apartheid prisons, including 18 years on the windswept Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town.

He was released in 1990 and went on to be elected president in the historic all-race elections in 1994 that ended white-minority rule in Africa's most important economy.

He used his unparalleled prestige to push for reconciliation between whites and blacks, setting up a commission to probe crimes committed by both sides in the anti-apartheid struggle.

Mandela's African National Congress has continued to govern since his retirement from politics in 1999, but has been criticized for perceived corruption and slowness in addressing apartheid-era inequalities in housing, education and healthcare.

Mandela spent time in a Johannesburg hospital in 2011 with a respiratory condition, and again in February this year because of abdominal pains. He was released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing serious.

He has since spent most of his time in Qunu.

His fragile health prevents him from making any public appearances in South Africa, although he has continued to receive high-profile domestic and international visitors, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton in July.
