With the new changes in kid's medicines, it's hard to keep up, and now what works best for your child when they have a fever, or are sick. So I was happy to recently be sent a bottle of Children's Advil to review!

Do you know what a fever is??


There are certain chemicals in the brain, which cause your body temperature to increase, aka a fever. Ibuprofen helps reduce the production of these chemicals, which in turn lowers the body temperature, and in turn reduces a fever. It works by blocking certain chemicals, that are produced in response to injury, certain diseases and conditions, that can cause aches and pains. NSAIDs (like Ibuprofen) block the production of these chemicals and are therefore effective at reducing pain, making your child feel more comfortable.

Did you know that Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are the only two active ingredients used in children's over-the-counter pain relievers/fever reducers? Seriously- go check out the labels, and you'll see it's true! Ibuprofen (the active ingredient in Children's Advil lasts longer than acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Children's Tylenol). In fact, Ibuprofen lasts up to 8 hours, while acetaminophen only lasts 4 - 6 hours, making it more highly recommended by doctors!


From a personal standpoint, I can attest to the difference. The last time Kiddo was sick we followed the doctor's recommendation of alternating the two, and we found?acetaminophen?pretty much leveled off at 4 hours, where as the Ibuprofren lasted for about 6-7 hours. When your child is trying to sleep, and ill, that's a HUGE difference!

It is important to remember: always read and keep the cartons for complete warnings and information on ACCURATE dosing for all Advil products. For Kiddo, for instance she went from 1 tbsp, to 1.5 tbsp, with the new dosing amounts. So make sure you check the new levels! ?The?Infants? Advil Concentrated Drops are for ages 6-23 months, where as the?
Children?s Advil Suspension Liquid are for ages 2-11 years.


Kiddo actually LIKED the new Children's Advil! She is SO picky on medicine flavoring (seriously, we went through THREE flavorings on the antibiotics on her ear infection, before we could get them down her!). So I was happy that she did not turn up her nose at it. In fact, it's her preferred medicine now! While she was happy with the taste, I was happy with how well her fever went down.

US city clears 'Jersey Shore' spinoff

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (AP) ? New Jersey's second largest city is welcoming the women of "Jersey Shore."

Jersey City has issued producers a permit to film a spinoff of the reality series featuring Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley. Filming is expected to begin later this month.

Nearby Hoboken last week denied a permit, citing safety and quality of life concerns.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy says he believes the show is an opportunity to promote the city.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. government fought an uphill battle Wednesday to convince a skeptical judge that tobacco companies should be required to put large graphic photos on cigarette packs to show that the habit kills smokers and their babies.

Cigarette makers told U.S. District Judge Richard Leon at a hearing that they can't be forced to spread the government's anti-smoking advocacy with "massive, shocking, gruesome warnings" on products they legally sell. Attorneys for the Obama administration countered that the photos of dead and diseased smokers it wants on all cigarette packs are "factually uncontroverted."

Leon has already ruled that the cigarette makers are likely to succeed in their lawsuit to stop the requirement, which was supposed to go into effect next year. Leon blocked the rule from taking effect until after the lawsuit is resolved.

Leon found in his earlier ruling that the nine graphic images approved by the Food and Drug Administration in June go beyond conveying the facts about the health risks of smoking or go beyond that into advocacy ? a critical distinction in a case over free speech.

Leon also ruled the size of the labels suggests they are unconstitutional ? the FDA requirement said the labels were to cover the entire top half of cigarette packs, front and back and include a number for a stop-smoking hotline. The labels were to constitute 20 percent of cigarette advertising, and marketers were to rotate use of the images.

The judge showed no sign that he was changing his position in favor of the government after the hour-long hearing Wednesday. "It sounds like they are headed to a place where you have to watch a 10-minute video before you can even buy a pack of cigarettes," he said.

The packaging the government wanted to require included color images of a man exhaling cigarette smoke through a tracheotomy hole in his throat; a plume of cigarette smoke enveloping an infant receiving a mother's kiss; a pair of diseased lungs next to a pair of healthy lungs; a diseased mouth afflicted with what appears to be cancerous lesions; a man breathing into an oxygen mask; a cadaver on a table with post-autopsy chest staples; a woman weeping; a premature baby in an incubator; and a man wearing a T-shirt that features a "No Smoking" symbol and the words "I Quit"

The Obama administration has appealed Leon's preliminary injunction stopping the rule from taking effect. The U.S. Court of Appeals is scheduled to hear the case April 10.

Attorney Mark Stern, representing the government, told Leon they do not expect he will change his mind after siding so strongly with the tobacco companies in his initial ruling. But he said the government disagrees and argued the images factually show what can happen to smokers. "This will kill you," Stern said. "This will kill your baby."

Tobacco lawyer Noel Francisco said the government is free to try to tell Americans how to live their lives, but not to require cigarette manufacturers "to serve as the government's unwilling spokesman in that paternalistic endeavor."

Congress instructed the FDA to require the labels by a wide bipartisan majority, following the lead of the Canadian regulations that require similarly graphic images on cigarette packs. But Leon said Wednesday "there's just nothing ? nothing ? on the record" to indicate lawmakers consider the First Amendment implications of compelling commercial speech.

The cigarette makers that sued the FDA are R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Lorillard Tobacco Co., Commonwealth Brands Inc., Liggett Group and Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co.

Summary Box: Sallie Mae changes policy on loan fee (AP)

THE NEWS: Private student lender Sallie Mae is changing how it handles a fee that struggling borrowers must pay to temporarily suspend payments.

THE BACKGROUND: A three-month reprieve on payments comes with a $50 fee that Sallie Mae previously did not apply to the loan balance. Now Sallie Mae says it will credit the money toward the loan if borrowers resume on-time payments for six months straight.

WHY NOW: A petition on Change.org asking the company to drop the fee had more than 77,000 signatures as of Thursday. The company said that confirmed its thinking that a change was needed.
